Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare and his fellow policemen Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar died fighting the terrorists who stuck Mumbai on the night of November 26 last year. But could they have been saved?

Headlines Today has exclusive access to call log records that clearly show that Karkare and his team desperately sent out messages for help to the police control room, but in vain.

According to the records, Karkare was near Cama Hospital with his assault team. The terrorists had taken positions on the hospital's rooftop and opened indiscriminate fire.

Here are excerpts from the conversations that took place:

11:25 pm, Cama Hospital
Hemant Karkare: We are at Cama Hospital. There is incessant firing from all sides and grenade blasts. We just witnessed a few blasts. Cama Hospital needs to be surrounded. We need good reinforcements. Call in the army.

Police Control Room: Sir, you need assistance near Cama Hospital, right?

Four minutes later, Karkare got in touch with the control room again.

Karkare: We have positioned two assault teams behind Cama Hospital. We need to take positions in front of the hospital. The army should be called in immediately.

Police Control Room: Noted.

But the reinforcements didn't come for more than 45 minutes. Karkare, Kamte and Salaskar tried to cover both flanks themselves and were gunned down by the terrorists.

Further, while Karkare was holding fort outside Cama Hospital, Additional Police Commissioner Sadanand Date was fighting terrorists Ajmal Amir Kasab and Ismail hiding inside the hospital.

The duo could have been caught then and there if the Mumbai Police Control Room had acted on time.

Through his walky-talky operator, Date sent out several SOS messages to the police control room, calling for reinforcements. But none of his calls got any response.

11.05 pm
Sadanand Date: We are going inside Cama Hospital.

Police Control Room: (No response)

11.22 pm
Date: We need help on the sixth floor of Cama Hospital.

Police Control Room: (No response)

Date: We need help immediately. There has been a blast.

Police Control Room: (No response)

Date got seriously injured in the grenade blast. No help came and the terrorists escaped. He informed the control room around midnight that the terrorists had escaped, but help came only after 12.45 am.
